This is a hopefully weekly post where I share the things that are lighting me up. I get very, very into things and I love to tell people about the things I am very, very into. Here’s what I’m obsessed with right now:
1. Killing Eve
I finished the first season of Killing Eve a couple of weeks ago, and I’m still thinking about it. Killing Eve is an international game of cat-and-mouse between Sandra Oh, deeply deserving of the Golden Globe she just won, and Jodie Comer, who is so, so good as the glamorous assassin Villanelle. Oh plays Eve Polastri, the British intelligence agent trying to hunt her down. I would watch Sandra Oh read the phonebook and so many people I trust had recommended it that I can’t believe it took me so long to watch.
2. This Molly Goddard dress from Killing Eve
If you see me wearing anything other than a pink poufy dress and Balenciaga combat boots ever again, kill me.
3. Severance by Ling Ma
I’m about halfway through this un-put-down-able post-apocalyptic novel set in the United States after a mysterious illness takes out almost the entire population. As The Paris Review puts it, “It is part satirical office drama, part immigrant narrative, part millennial bildungsroman—with a dash of zombie apocalypse.” I hesitate to say more, as I think the less you know about it going in, the better.
4. Dream House
Dream House’s website describes it as a “sound and light environment.” It’s essentially an art gallery that doubles as a soundbath meditation. Walk up an unassuming staircase in Tribeca, pay $10, and stay as long as you like. Their website is currently down, but this article (which also uses the word unassuming) should give you some sense of what to expect. I went last Friday and it was a welcome break from the streets of NYC.
5. Oliver Jeffers’s entire deal
I was fortunate to see artist and children’s book author Oliver Jeffers speak at Creative Mornings on Friday (I’ll link to a video of his presentation once it’s live). He spoke about creativity, death awareness, parenthood, climate change, hangovers, our current atmosphere of xenophobia, and Northern Ireland, among other things.
In two weeks, Jeffers will have an installation on the High Line with the Earth and the moon, representing their actual distance apart. I can’t wait.
